A good artist is one whose abilities lie within the diversity of their sound, and their capability to switch and shift to adapt to changing moods, vibes, and sonic characteristics. By that logic, Caroline Rose is one of the greats.
With a musical career that spans more than a prolific decade of releases, Rose’s body of work is one defined by blending psychobilly, pop, shoegaze, alt-country, folk, electronic, and rock music. Never one to sit still, Rose moves fluidly between sonic worlds while maintaining a singular artistic voice – a voice that commands your attention.
Enigmatic and restless, Rose’s eclectic output has resulted in widespread acclaim on a global scale, with audiences around the world having been converted due to their role as a commanding live performer.
Rose has brought their work to stages across North America, Europe, and the UK in multiple forms: intimate solo performances, raucous full band shows in independent clubs, high-concept full-band productions, and orchestral collaborations with ensembles including the London Contemporary Orchestra and Metropolis Ensemble. Whether appearing in a stripped back format or indulging in the cinematic, their performances are immersive, emotionally direct, and visually considered.
“Rose has always pushed against expectations, whether it’s an industry that exploits artists, which led them to start their own independent record label, or their own ideas about what a ‘serious artist’ is supposed to look and sound like.” – WXPN’s World Cafe
Caroline Rose – ‘Yip Yip Yow’
But Rose isn’t just an accomplished artist. Fiercely independent, they strive to carve out a career beyond the industry’s machinery. Their music has evolved alongside their work organising with musicians, venue workers, and independent crews around stronger labour protections and collective bargaining rights. The desire is to create a system with an even playing field, and one in which art is the victor.
In 2025, Rose followed up the Grammy-nominated The Art of Forgetting with the more subdued year of the slug, an unpolished collection recorded entirely on an iPhone in GarageBand, shared exclusively on Bandcamp, and embracing the concepts of immediacy and intimacy.
A year on, and Rose has launched their newly formed label SUCK records with which to release their latest effort, Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall.
Working with producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen), Rose built the album through humour, layering, and instinct rather than polish. Pairing sharply observed, memoiristic songwriting with expansive guitar textures that render the everyday with violent clarity and mythic scale, an intimidating current of violence and American dream leakage lie beneath its melodic sweep and signature hooks runs.
Whether it’s leaning into the alt-country introspection of I Will Not Be Afraid, ramping it up with the psychobilly bite of LONER, or offering the sleek, self-produced synth-pop ambition of Superstar, Caroline Rose is an artist whose need to evolve is as vital as their need to create. The result is an artist who never stands still, who never looks back, but always impresses.
