Gut Health

Ever since Gut Health first formed in a sharehouse on Hope St in Naarm/Melbourne’s inner north in 2022, they’ve consistently turned heads as one of so-called-Australia’s most compelling new acts.

Comprising Athina Uh oh (she/her; vocals), Eloise Murphy-Hill (they/them; guitar), Dom Willmott (he/him; guitar, synth), Angus Fletcher (he/him; percussion, synth), Myka Wallace (they/them; drums) and Adam Mckay (he/him; bass), the sextet wasted no time in making their presence felt, releasing their Electric Party Chrome Girl EP in 2022, and a string of well-received singles in 2023.

Almost immediately, their impact was felt both at home and abroad, with the group sharing stages with Queens of the Stone Age, POND, Otoboke Beaver, The Black Lips, Mudhoney and local icons RVG, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, and Body Type. Alongside showcasing at BIGSOUND and SXSW Sydney, they also made their debut performance at Meredith Music Festival last year.

Now the group are entering into their latest era with the arrival of their debut album, Stiletto. Recorded with Julian Cue (CIVIC, Screensaver) and Gut Health’s Dom Willmott at Button Pusher Studios and APAX Warehouse in Preston, with production handled by Willmott and Adam Markmann, the album is an immersive ten-track foray into dancefloor-inducing soundscapes and punchy prowess, with songs oscillating between infectious up-tempo numbers, hypnotic bliss and chaotic noise edging precariously toward collapse.

Building upon their Electric Party Chrome Girl EP with a more realised and expansive exploration of Gut Health’s musical core, the central elements of their music – chaotic verses juxtaposed with hypnotic and danceable rhythms, and melodicism remains – but Stiletto encapsulates a vaster sense of depth and dimension.

excitable and exciting, enchantingly untamed… they’ve duly delivered.

Gut Health – Cool Moderator

Dynamic front-person Athina Uh oh’s lyrics build upon their stream-of-consciousness approach to writing, obliquely drawing upon personal experiences and broader societal observations – like the value of listening and sharing, the challenges of contemporary so-called Australia, the destruction and erasure of Indigenous countries and people, and the empowerment of high-femmes and marginalised communities – while largely leaning into imagery and concepts to entice listeners to form song interpretations of their own.

Gut Health’s music has long been focused on the healing qualities of consensual rage, with an unparalleled ability to build lingering tension and release in their instrumentation. Every song has its story, yes, but more than this their music is a transient commentary on life that they share as an offering, for listeners to find their own meaning in their words.
