Originally beginning as a solo project for Auckland jazz school-trained pianist Crystal Choi, Aotearoa-quartet Phoebe Rings have grown, evolved, and matured dramatically since their earliest days.
Forming in 2019 after having met through mutual creative friends and projects, and named for the outermost ring around Saturn which is known to be the largest, but the least visible, Phoebe Rings’ first major gig was a big one, opening for New Zealand heroes The Beths.
Flourishing within the Tämaki Makaurau/Auckland music ecosystem, the group performed gigs in their unique signature blend of jazz-inspired dream-pop and building a devoted fanbase.
Often described as an ‘Indie Supergroup,’ Phoebe Rings’ pedigree is well-documented, with all members – including drummer Alex Freer, guitar/synthesist Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent, and bassist Benjamin Locke – known as prolific musicians with distinct solo projects. This includes involvement with other notable NZ acts such as Princess Chelsea, Fazerdaze, Tiny Ruins, AC Freazy, and Lucky Boy.
Following a signing to Carpark Records in 2024, Phoebe Rings issued their self-titled debut EP last October, with their debut LP Aseurai arriving in June 2025.
Affectionately dubbed the ‘Sunday Sessions,’ by Choi, the band religiously wrote, practised, recorded and produced for the album every Sunday across 2023-2024 while balancing work and other musical projects.
The result is a record which sees Phoebe Rings continue to explore their disco and city-pop influences while staying true to the dream-pop sound of their self-titled debut EP released last year. “Aseurai means around you in the atmosphere, hard to reach, fading away,” Choi says, “it’s a poetic expression. You wouldn’t say it in normal conversation, but I like that.”

Phoebe Rings – ‘Fading Star’
If their EP was spacey, then Aseurai settles on earth, rooted in tangible moments. The album delves into hope and longing across all possibilities, and this exploration of holding on and letting go is organically threaded throughout.
Across ten songs, Phoebe Ring’s storytelling ranges from tongue-in-cheek musings on gentrification to tender autobiographical memories, marking out a brilliant new constellation in their sky, bringing their individual compositions to the fore whilst seamlessly threading them into one celestial body all underpinned by their ongoing inspirations: Studio Ghibli films, Zelda and Stardew soundtracks, Bossa Nova, Stereolab, and ’90s Korean ballads.
