Taiwanese-Australian singer, producer, songwriter and multimedia artist Jaguar Jonze unveiled her highly anticipated debut album BUNNY MODE, in 2022, to widespread critical acclaim.
As well as being a personal triumph of resilience, BUNNY MODE was an incredible creative work that allowed the world-building artistry of Jaguar Jonze to shine through. Throughout the album she found strength in vulnerability, tackled the dark stuff with sharp-edged humour, and radiated confidence.
On BUNNY MODE, Jaguar Jonze – aka Deena Lynch – created a unique and cinematic patchwork of stadium pop, industrial noise, and punchy punk energy to tell her story. It’s jagged, fierce, uplifting, and haunting all at once; a fist-pump in a sweaty room, a solo dance on the living room floor, an echo that reverberates around a canyon. The album is more than just music: it is an entire world for the listener to step inside.
“Most things I did in my life, I did for survival.” she says. “But, making music was the complete opposite: it was a gift and permission to myself to create, live passionately, and say what I was feeling. It was passion, intimacy, rawness, and connection; it completely changed my life. It made me feel human.”
When it came time to make BUNNY MODE, Jonze worked alongside her band, Aidan Hogg (bass/co-producer/synths), Joe Fallon (guitar/string arrangements), and Jacob Mann (drums) – the collaborators that Lynch calls “family.” They pieced the album together across home and studio sessions in Brisbane and Coorabell in Northern NSW, and made use of the scrappy but passionate voice memos Lynch would record herself. The aim was to centre the authenticity and importance of her songwriting and capture the bubbly, high-energy fizz of her personality in sound.
Jaguar Jonze’s brand of feisty, high-octane art-pop has seen comparisons to St. Vincent, Japanese Breakfast, Charli XCX, K.Flay, and Paramore. Like those musical contemporaries, Lynch is in command of every element of her creative output, both aesthetic and aural. From songwriting to styling, she is self-taught in every area, viewing creativity as a chance to explore, learn and grow.
A powerful feminist work that explored her journey as an assault survivor, an advocate for change, and a figure on the frontline of Australia’s #MeToo movement, BUNNY MODE saw Jaguar Jonze radiate confidence, find strength in vulnerability and tackle dark topics with lightness and humour. Together with her band, she has created a unique and cinematic patchwork of stadium pop and industrial noise, all laced with a punchy-punk energy.
