RINSE is the solo project of the prolific Naarm/Melbourne-via-Meanjin/Brisbane artist Joe Agius (he/him) – also known as a co-writer, producer and live performer with much-loved act Hatchie.
Showing another side of Agius’ repertoire in meticulously written pop songs dressed with shoegaze guitars and 80s drums, RINSE has been likened to the golden era of The Cure, My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins.
RINSE recently announced their signing to Naarm/Melbourne-based label COHORT (Juice Webster, Mimi Gilbert) signposted with the release of ‘Stranger’ featuring LA-based artist and producer Caroline Loveglow. Packed with nostalgia, lush shoegaze guitars, and a carefully constructed vocal choir from Loveglow, ‘Stranger’ shares the magic of serendipitous encounters when paths cross with someone who, despite being a complete unknown to you previously, has a strange familiarity to them that builds into an intense or strong relationship over one night.
He quickly followed up with ‘Kiss Me (Kill Me)‘ feat. Hatchie, which dives into the trials and tribulations of trying to keep a love together that’s splintering at its seams. Hatchie previously featured on RINSE’s 2020 single ‘Back Into Your Arms’, which was named “a bonafide slice of indie bliss” by Mixdown, “an emotive, anthemic, glorious fusion of post-punk, shoegaze, new-wave and good old indie pop….It’s a total winner” by Purple Sneakers and has since had more than 900,000 streams cross-platform. The genesis of ‘Kiss Me (Kill Me)’ is similar to that of ‘Back Into Your Arms’ – with Agius sharing co-writing duties in Hatchie, the original intention was for it to be a song for her, before realising it made more sense at home as RINSE.

RINSE’s debut single ‘Tell Me Tell Me Tell Me’ was mixed by Jorge Elbrecht (Japanese Breakfast, Wild Nothing, Sky Ferreira) and mastered by Heba Kadry (Bjork, Slowdive, Beach House, Deerhunter); since, Aguis has released two EPs as RINSE, Sinker° (2023) and Wherever I Am (2021), generated over 1 million streams cross-platform, performed with George Clanton (US), RVG and ENOLA, and across his music output has received widespread support and airplay from the likes of Stereogum, KEXP, triple j, NPR, The FADER, NME, Paper Magazine, Purple Sneakers, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, Triple R, PBS FM, 2SER and many others.
